Qualification Overview

This qualification is for learners working or preparing to work in low-risk environments. It is recognized by the Health & Safety Executive as essential for maintaining effective health and safety practices in the workplace.

Requirement for SIA Courses: From April 2021, a valid First Aid certificate with at least 12 months’ validity is required for SIA Door Supervisor courses, renewals, and Top-Up training.


Entry Guidance

No formal prerequisites. Learners should have at least Level 1 in literacy or equivalent. Max 12 learners per tutor. Available to all age ranges.

Why has First Aid changed? HSE updates recommend new training regimes to align with revised risk assessments.

What is EFAW? Emergency First Aid at Work – a 1-day course certified for 3 years, with a wallet-size plastic card issued.

Is there a requalification? Certificate is valid for 3 years. Retake required after expiry. Annual refresher is highly recommended.


How long will it take?

7 hours of learning in a single day, with minimum 6 hours contact time.

  • Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Recognising and managing illness and injuries
  • CPR and use of AED
  • First aid for major injuries (chest, spinal, anaphylaxis)

Assessment Method

Practical demonstration and multiple-choice test of 15 questions. Pass mark: 11/15 (70%).
